We have many kinds of water on our planet. Water is essential to all life. We have the free flowing water in our lakes, rivers and streams, there is the salt water in our oceans, and municipal water that flows from our tap.
But is water just water?
Stop and think about it a minute. We have all kinds of different gasoline for our cars. We have many different wines that are available. Why not different kinds of water? For instance, we have bottled water that comes to us with many different labels from companies all over the world. There are various flavors; some have a fizz to them, some claim to be from a special spring that is suppose to make it very healthy water and we even have some that claim to be ‘pure’ which is distilled or reverse osmosis, unfortunately, all the minerals are missing in these waters.
So the question is — Which water is best for us?
Water is either acidic or alkaline – what are you drinking?
When we are talking about pH (Potential Hydrogen) lets look at the scientific scale for pH. Notice that the scale goes from 1-14.
- 7 pH being the neutral number.
- The lower the number the more acidic.
- The higher the number the more alkaline.
We can measure the pH with a special meter or we can use drops that are made to turn the water a different color according to the its pH.
Our body’s water will seek to maintain a balanced pH which is 7.365 pH to 7.4pH even if it has to rob minerals from our bones!! This is why the more alkaline we can keep the fluid in our cells the happier our body will be and no minerals will be robbed from our bones!!
It is interesting to note that as far back as 1931 Dr. Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize for discovering that disease cannot live in an alkaline environment but thrives in an acidic one.
What do we do that affects the fluids in the cells of our body?
1: Everything we eat is either alkaline or acidic.
2: Everything we drink is either alkaline or acidic.
3: Everything we breath moves us toward the acidic or alkaline – usually the more pollution the more acidic we become.
Let’s look briefly at the Standard American Diet (SAD) – too often it is fast foods, processed food, refined or junk foods, soda and sports drinks all of which are VERY acidic.
Thus, the people who eat the SAD diet become very acidic. People who eat largely from fruits, vegetables, legumes and grains are more alkaline. Proving the old adage that “We are what we eat and drink.” Therefore, the easiest way to keep your body fluids more alkaline is to eat more fresh foods and drink alkaline water
Let’s test the pH of some of our popular drinks…
Using pH drops we get an array of colors indicating that all sodas, sports drinks, bottled water, and even Pedi-Light test acidic from about 2.5 pH (equivalent to battery acid) in sodas to around 4-6 pH in most bottled water.
Tap water and most spring waters will be mostly neutral. This is because by law tap water must be kept at around a 7 pH to protect the pipes in the city…not our bodies. This is done by adding alkaline chemicals like lye (caustic) to adjust the pH. Spring water by law need only contain 10% actual spring water and the rest can be tap water!!
A few bottled waters are naturally at a 7 pH but often at the cost of much fuel expenditure, thus, creating a large carbon footprint, not to mention the cost of bottled water!
The pH of tap water doesn’t tell the full story. As you may know, that added to our municipal tap water are the chemicals of chlorine and flouride. Chlorine is highly reactive, and when combined with the pollutants found in our tap water, it can form toxic chemicals such as chloramines. Fluoride is a controversial aluminum by-product which has been banned in most of Europe. Tap waters can also contain pharmaceuticals, detergents, heavy metals, fertilizer from farm run offs, even pesticides and herbacides that are sprayed on crops and soil to keep the bugs and weeds away.
Micro-Clustering – What’s That?
Logically we recognize that micro means small so we are really talking about small clusters of water. Usually 15-20 molecules of water travel together, if they a micro-clustered there is only 5-6 molecules traveling together. This allows the water to really penetrate our cells much quicker with more efficiency.
When we put a tea bag in boiling water we get tea – what has happened to the water? Boiling actually breaks up the large clusters to smaller clusters that can get into the tea bag and we get tea. However, the larger clusters reform as the water cools so this is not a practical way to get small clustered water to drink. Wouldn’t it be interesting to find a water that can make tea in cold water – 2 glasses with just bottled water and 2 glasses of microclustered water: Using 1 teabag, move it between the 4 glasses — note that 2 have now tea. What made the difference – microclustered water!!
What should we be drinking?
- alters the structure of the groups of water molecules making them easier to be absorbed
- lowers the electrical charge (mV) of the water making it a potent anti-oxidant
- gives the water alkaline minerals, which are easily absorbed by our cells
- helps the blood to carry more oxygen throughout the body
- nutrients are absorbed in body cells much easier just as toxins are removed
- with this optimum hydration comes more energy, less pain in the joints, and less fatigue.
- you may also find that you can even think and remember more clearly
Of course all this happens only when you drink enough ionized water that is purified, structured, alkalized and enlivened with negative ions like the water that is found coming off our glaciers and in our small mountain streams.
So, how much is enough?? This will vary somewhat with each individual lifestyle and physical condition. You should always take the best insulated water bottle with you. A general rule of thumb is to divide your body weight by 2 and that’s the number of ounces that you need to drink daily.
